The celebration usually begins at Avdi Square, where people gather before the carnival parade moves through the narrow streets of Metaxourgeio and Kerameikos. The event has a strongly self-organized and participatory character, without strict structure or official organizers, which gives it an authentic and alternative atmosphere.

Throughout the neighborhood, the streets become a lively stage filled with striking costumes, handmade masks, and music performed by percussion groups, bands, and DJs. Carnival participants of all ages join an improvised parade that gradually turns into a large street party full of energy and creativity.

Metaxourgeio itself is a historic district of Athens that took its name from a silk factory that operated in the area during the 19th century. In recent years, the neighborhood has evolved into a vibrant artistic hub, and the carnival reflects this urban cultural identity, celebrating community, creativity, and artistic expression.

Members of the photography community Moments Collective visited Metaxourgeio this year to document this unique atmosphere. With their cameras, they walked through the streets capturing moments of joy, expression, and spontaneity that define the spirit of the celebration.
